Broken Gifts

Preparing for a transition can be really hard.  There is lots of work to do, both physically and emotionally.  This is compounded when we journey with someone preparing for death.

Last week, we heard the powerful truth that – even in the midst of pain – God wants to celebrate with us.  This week, we will encounter the story of Mary in John 12:1-8 as she gives a lavish and intimate gift to Jesus.  She broke a jar of costly perfume and annointed the feet of her dear friend, Jesus, to prepare him for his death.  Even though Judas (and the other disciples according to other gospel accounts) did not find this gift appropriate, Jesus received it.  Jesus receives all gifts made in love. However broken they may be.

Speaking of gifts, our church lost a significant one this week.  Gwen Nerrie, long-time member, servant, and community-builder, has entered into eternal rest with God (just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday).  She was well known to many in our congregation. For those of you who don’t know her, the Highlands Current recently ran a delightful piece on her.  Arrangements are currently being made with the family.  Please keep them – and all those who grieve her loss – in your prayers.

In Christ,

Pastor Ben
