Midweek Message 1/12/17

Friends in faith,

Last Sunday, we learned about real change in the story of Jesus being baptized by John in the Jordan. We learned that change is less about what we do and more about who we are, with whom we stand, and how we love. This Sunday, we will hear about Jesus’ inaugural address in his home town—found in Luke 4:14-30—as he reads from the prophet Isaiah. Jesus shares, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…” (the same words we heard a few weeks back as Rev. Richard Witt, Director of Rural & Migrant Ministry preached on the original text from Isaiah). Here’s the thing, he follows this prophetic proclamation with a reminder about how God has been faithful to people who were most certainly not from Jesus’ hometown. Jesus’ bold sharing about God among “those” people almost got him killed. And he was just getting started…

On Monday, we will gather with the rest of the Beacon community at Springfield Baptist Church to remember and celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The day is full of activities (see below). At 11am, Lily Larson-Wolbrink and Penny Rigney will be joining other young people to read portions of King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. At 1pm, Bruce Mather will be singing in the gospel choir and I will be preaching. Lunch will be provided.

On Saturday, January 21, we’ll have a Game Night at the church, 6-8pm. Bring a fast, family friendly game to play (sorry, no Monopoly or Risk) that we can play and get to know each other. All are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks (think finger food, easy and quick to clean) to share.

Hope to see you!

In Christ,

Pastor Ben
