Midweek Message – 12/1/16

Friends in Faith,

We kicked off Advent last Sunday pondering Daniel’s faithfulness in exile. After worship, our Food & Fellowship became a hullabaloo of decorating our Reverse Advent Calendar boxes. It’s not too late to grab a box and join us! Here’s a description of the process & scripture verses and here’s a list of some suggested items to put in the box. We’re so excited to bless our friends from the Welcome Table and others in need this year!

This Sunday, Pastor Gretchen will be preaching on the provocative theme: “Who is your president?” focusing on Joel 2:12-13, 28-29. She will be joined in worship leadership by Rev. Gavin Meek, the Interim Executive Presbyter for Hudson River Presbytery. He will be meeting with the Session prior to worship, and he will be available for a Q & A time during Food & Fellowship.

But, before Sunday, we hope you’ll join us for the Hanging o’ the Greens this 16-1201_charlie-brownSaturday, at 10am. Come, help us decorate the sanctuary and exterior of the church. Special crafts for children will be provided in the Amity Arts Center in the basement.

Next Week

  • Sat, Dec 10 – Christmas Caroling at the Creche: Polhill Park, 4pm – Come, help us spread some Christmas cheer with friends from other congregations. *On every Saturday at 4pm in December you’ll find caroling as part of a month-long ecumenical program to remind our community of the reason for the season (see image below for details).
  • Sun, Dec 11 – Worship led by Rev. Richard Witt of Rural Migrant Ministries: Sanctuary, 10am – Hear a powerful vision for how we can honor those who labor among us.
  • Sun, Dec 11 – Artwork for “Sanctuary of Angels” Due: All are invited to submit art for this special show that will run in the Amity Arts Center in conjunction with our Blue Christmas Service on Sat, Dec 17. No art experience necessary–in fact, I’m actually working on a sculpture for the show. If I can do it, anyone can! Contact our Artist-in-Residence, Kat, for more information: amityartscenter@gmail.com

We planned to wrap up our 2016 Stewardship Campaign two weeks ago, but we’re so close to our goal of $75,000. As of last week, we have 33 pledges totaling $73,866. Can you help us meet our goal by year’s end? Thanks to all who pledged toward our 2017 ministry budget and we hope you’ll do so if you haven’t already!

  • 2017 Offering envelope boxes are available for those who requested them at the entrance to the sanctuary.
  • Christmas Gift cards are a great way to help a local family in need shop for their Christmas needs. Gift cards can be given during the offering or turned into the office by Dec 11 (so families can have time for Christmas shopping).

In Christ,

Pastor Ben

Advent and Christmas at First Presbyterian

Dec 17 – Blue Christmas Service: Holidays got you down? Is there someone you know struggling with grief? Join us at 5pm as we point to the light in the midst of the darkness. *Directly after the Blue Christmas Service, please feel free to join us in the Amity Arts Center (in the basement) for a “Sanctuary of Angels” art installation, hot cider and places to talk or rest in quiet contemplation.

Dec 18 – Christmas Pageant: Invite your friends to worship to see the story of Jesus’ birth as told by our Young Disciples. We’ll also have a special musical offering from our choir.

Dec 24 – Christmas Eve Candlelight Service: Come at 8pm for our traditional Christmas Eve service.

Dec 25 – Christmas Brunch & Carols: Instead of a traditional worship, we’ll gather at 10am to ring the bell, say a prayer, and then move to McKinley Hall for a potluck Christmas brunch with our friends from the Welcome Table. We’ll sing Christmas carols and give out Reverse Advent Calendar boxes as a part of the celebration.
