Midweek Message 12/8/16

Friends in Faith,

Last Sunday, Pastor Gretchen offered a powerful Advent reflection on faithfulness in these times. Other worship 16-1208_pastor-gretchenleadership came from the choir and from Rev. Gavin Meek, and we learned more from him after worship about changes in Hudson River Presbytery and how we might be strengthened for ministry as a connectional church.

Speaking of strong, connectional ministry, we welcome Rev. Richard Witt to the pulpit this Sunday, as he preaches on Isaiah 61:1-11. Richard is the director of Rural & Migrant Ministry, which is supported by Hudson River Presbytery and many other ministries/organizations. Some of you met Richard last summer when we hosted the group marching to Albany to advocate for farmworker rights.

But, before Sunday, we hope you’ll join us as we gather with friends to sing some Christmas Caroling down at Polhill Park this Saturday, Dec 10th at 4pm. This is part of the BeaconArts/City of Beacon Holiday celebration and we hope to see you there!

In Christ,

Pastor Ben

Next Weekend

Sat, Dec 17 – Blue Christmas at 5pm: Holidays got you down? Is there someone you know struggling with grief? Join us for a quiet, contemplative service as we point to the light in the midst of the darkness.16-1208_xmas-pageant

*Directly after the Blue Christmas Service, please feel free to join us in the Amity Arts Center (in the basement) for a “Sanctuary of Angels” art installation, hot cider and places to talk or rest in quiet contemplation.

Sun, Dec 18 – Christmas Pageant at 10am: Invite your friends to worship to see the story of Jesus’ birth as told by our Young Disciples. We’ll end the service by singing the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah.  All those familiar with this piece are welcome to join the choir!

Giving

  • Stewardship Campaign: We have extended the deadline of our 2016 Stewardship Campaign until the end of the year. With 34 pledges totaling $74,866, we’re so close to our goal of $75,000.  Can you help us meet our goal by year’s end? Thanks to all who pledged toward our 2017 ministry budget and we hope you’ll do so if you haven’t already!
  • 2017 Offering envelope boxes are available for those who requested them at the entrance to the sanctuary.
  • Christmas Gift cards are a great way to help a local family in need shop for their Christmas needs. Gift cards can be given during the offering or turned into the office by Dec 11 (so families can have time for Christmas shopping).

Christmas at First Presbyterian

Dec 24 – Christmas Eve Candlelight Service: Come at 8pm for our traditional Christmas Eve service.

Dec 25 – Christmas Brunch & Carols: Instead of a traditional worship, we’ll gather at 10am to ring the bell, say a prayer, and then move to McKinley Hall for a potluck Christmas brunch with our friends from the Welcome Table. We’ll sing Christmas carols and give out Reverse Advent Calendar boxes as a part of the celebration.
