Midweek Message – 4/27/17

Friends in faith,

Last Sunday, we heard the story of how the risen Christ was with the disciples along the road, even though they didn’t recognize him. As they remembered, their hearts burned within them. As the bread was broken, their eyes were opened.

This Sunday, we’ll hear the story of the challenges facing the growing community of believers who, after Jesus’ ascension, were on fire with the Holy Spirit. In Acts 6:1-7:2; 44-60, we learn about how the apostles established the first deacons to ensure that all were given the care they needed and about how one of them, Stephen, became the first martyr for the faith.

Before Sunday, we have a couple of events at the church that you won’t want to miss (more details below):

  • Friday, at 7pm in McKinley Hall: Movies that Matter featuring Dramatic Escape a film about the power of theater for those incarcerated.
  • Saturday at 1pm in McKinley Hall: Beacon Citizen Soapbox, a chance to hear from our neighbors about the dreams and struggles of community

Pastor Ben

Friday, April 28, Doors Open 7pm

See the work of the Rehabilitation Through Arts (RTA) program in action and catch a glimpse into the lives of a group of maximum security prisoners as they mount a behind-bars stage production of A Few Good Men at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in upstate New York. The director of RTA is the spouse of Hans Hallundbaek, director of the Presbyterian Prison Partnership of  Hudson River Presbytery.

Saturday, April 29 from 1-3pm

Through a series of presentations, each lasting three minutes or less, a nonpartisan “Citizen Soapbox” will provide a chance for all of us to hear directly about our neighbors’ priorities and concerns. We want all of Beacon’s communities to be represented in this discussion. To make the event more accessible, childcare will be provided.
